Dream, Reach, Achieve
The idea behind Evolving Dance Company started years ago before there was even a name for it. I was lucky enough to train in a studio that taught me hard work does pay off and that if you love something, don’t let anyone tell you differently. I was fully immersed into the art of dance and perfecting the craft and was fortunate enough to have been on this journey under an amazing mentor. She not only taught us dance, but also life lessons along the way. One of the biggest ones I held onto was “Dream, Reach, Achieve”. It sounded simple at first but then after graduation and realizing the real world is complicated, that saying grew to be more important to me. I learned that a lot of people have dreams, but also that a lot of people don’t reach for their dreams; then out of the group of people who actually reach for what they dreamed, only a very small group will ever achieve their dream. That idea scared me.
I always thought my dream was that I wanted to be a professional dancer, but I mistook what I was really reaching for. My real dream was to create a safe place that humans can become dancers and dancers can be pushed to become artists. I was so lucky to train in a studio where everyone was loved but was also being pushed to their full potential. That studio had a pulse that filled the room with real emotions. It was a safe place to laugh, to be weird, to cry, and to be authentically yourself. It made such an impact on me that I will forever be thankful for. After leaving and learning that there are a lot of places that aren’t like that, it broke my heart. The tendency for people within the dance community to promote drama was something I couldn’t wrap my mind around.
In 2019 the first form of Evolving Dance Company started. It didn’t have a name at the time but the idea was there. I was trying to figure out a way to have a healthy environment like the one I grew up in but also allow dancers from all over the area to come and dance together. I wanted dancers who were serious about their craft to be together and to watch the magic happen when they are allowed to just dance. At this time I was teaching at multiple studios and was coming across some very talented dancers. They all were unique in their own way and very gifted but the one thing they all had in common was their undeniable passion for dance.
Towards the end of 2019, the idea became fully realized. I was starting my own pre-professional company with talented dancers from the area. I had rented out a space for the company to perform. This idea was about to happen, my dream was coming true. The one thing I was missing was a name for the company. After a lot of thought, I settled on “Evolving Dance Company”. I wanted something that could keep growing. I didn’t want my dancers to evolve and just stop. I also didn’t want them to already have evolved. Putting it in present tense shows that the dancers are constantly growing and getting better. The company itself can change, grow, breathe and still be the vision I was going for. Evolving Dance Company was finally made.
Unfortunately, as soon as it was all happening, the 2020 Pandemic started and shut down the show. I took it as a sign that maybe this idea I’d had wasn’t meant to happen. I dropped my shoulder and kept pushing on and left Evolving Dance Company behind. I still was able to teach and work with these dancers which was a blessing in itself. After moving back home from Philly, I started teaching at a local studio. I met so many amazing families and even more talented dancers all right in my back yard.
By the summer of 2022, I had gotten to know many of the dancers and their families. I was personally affected as I watched talented kids give up on themselves and dance because they did not have the environment that I had been fortunate enough to train in. As if it was a sign from above, I came across my old notebook for “Evolving Dance Company” and took this as my cue to create the place these kids needed. I realized everything happens for a reason and now is better than ever to start this company.
“Evolving Dance Company” was reborn.
Looking back at the past couple of years, I wouldn’t change any of it. There were times where I didn’t know if I wanted to Reach for this Dream, but I’m glad I did. All the long days, endless hours of teaching, self doubt and artistic differences, was worth it. I finally Achieved my Dream and it’s everything I wanted. I will now push all my dancers to Reach for their Dreams and will help them to Achieve whatever they set out to do.
